Mailart Monday: Love is all we need

Love is al we need

Over at Stampotique Designer's Challenge Blog, the challenges and ATC swaps are starting up again. This fortnight the theme is "anything goes" for both the challenge and ATC swap. Good time to showcase an ATC I made a little while ago but hadn't gotten around to show you yet. I made this ATC with the last last over piece from my Poe Halloween card projects which I used as background. And as focal point I used little miss Pigtails. She looks like she could use a big old hug. After I adhered her to the ATC I noticed that the heart next to her could use warmer colors and perhaps a quote would fit as well.

Love is al we need

This is the finished ATC. Eventually, love is what we all really need, right? Hope my swap partner will like this ATC :) I am planning on making an mail art envelope to go with it. Perhaps I can show you that next week!

Oh and here is how little Miss Pigtails looks all cut out
Paper cutting is definitely a practice in patience. #stampotiqueoriginals #papercutting #danieltorrente #paperdoll #rubberstamping #promarkers #letrasetpromarkers #coloring #colorcoordination
Stampotique stamps really do try my patience and help improve my paper cutting skills ;)

Art Journal: A bright burst of thoughts

A bright burst of thoughts

When I was walking about in the Hague I entered the Flying Tiger and saw they had a couple of spiral bound journals for sale with black sturdy pages in them. "Oh no," I thought, " this could be the beginning of new art journals!" And yeah I took them home with me to test. It's a smaller journal (A7 sized) a bit bigger than ATC size which appealed to me. I also wanted to work directly onto the paper, instead of adhering a made page into my journals like I have done before. Also I have no spiral journal. Yes, yes I'm reciting all the excuses I had in my head before buying the journal, haha!

A bright burst of thoughts
To start off I added a layer of crafter's workshop golden gesso as a primer. Then took their Burst stencil and applied some light and fluffy modeling paste to it. I placed the burst center on the right side so the rays spread out on the left. Let that dry and added dabs distress paints onto the paper from top to bottom: Fired Brick, Ripe Persimmon, Mustard Seed and Fossilized Amber. I spritzed water over it and let the colors blend and mix until the stenciled image was covered in paint. After I heat dried it I took a script stencil and applied some more fluffy paste over it.  I dabbed some evergreen bough and blue print sketch on the craft sheet and spritzed some water over it. This time took a brush to color the script in blue tones and parts around the rays as well. After that all dried I spritzed some mica sprays in buttercup and corn flower over it. The half face stamp is Franco Face from Lost Coast Designs, which I love using in my other art journals. I made several of those faces to be used in other projects. I adhered the face to the right and then lightened the aria around it with a mix of mustard seed and picket fence distress strains and applied it with a brush. To give color back to the script I used the blue Wink of Stella brush pen over the script.
Bright Burst of thoughts
I do love how the the first page I made in the journal turned out!
Entering this journal page in the MMMC #32 put a stencil on it.

And the Lost Coast Portal to Creativity Challenge #32 Anything goes

You might be wondering what I did with the other half of the face, right? Well I used that for an ATC which you can see below:
fantasy dream world ATC
It was made for a Fantasy themed swap at Art chicks Studio FB group.

fantasy dream world ATC
I also used the skyline stamp ATC size from Lost Coast Designs. Used clear embossing on the card then rubbed pearl metallic rubs over the raised edges. then some black distress crayon for the shadows. Written words with a white gel pen and the outline as well. Here the words are still in the girl's head, but on my art journal page she managed to get them out :)

Thank you for stopping by and wishing you a creative and wonderful weekend!

Fountain Pen People know why

Akkerman Den Haag

When returning to work this week, after a great week off relaxing, cleaning up my art room and being creative, I found this interesting article  on my desk placed by one of my colleagues. It's a profile piece about P.W. Akkerman in the the Hague and I thought I would share it with you here. The title of this piece struck me because yes, only fountain pen people know why this is not only great to read in modern media but also important. The Millennial certainly set off this age to be almost completely digital and with the news of the cursive writing method not being thought anymore in schools, it's esp. important to find an instrument to help you keep writing daily, analog style. For me that instrument is definitely a fountain pen. Seeing this article is written in Dutch I have translated it to English for my fellow fountain pen enthusiasts worldwide. Enjoy!

Translation of the ARTICLE in English

They supplied the fountain pen and ink with which Princess Beatrix abdicated the throne, but fountain pen specialist P.W. Akkerman has 15-year-old students as customers. "A fountain pen is closer to you than any other writing instrument whatsoever."

As “Spaans Benauwd”*  as Arthur Akkerman and Paul Rutte no one will have ever been, when Queen Beatrix on April 30, 2013, just after ten o'clock in the morning, live on television on the Act of Abdication arc. Fountain pen and ink with which Beatrix was putting her signature, were supplied by P. W. Akkerman.

The interview with the Volkskrant starts with a false note. Akkerman and Rutte jabbed the reporter as if he has just showed up in clown suit at a funeral. They find it incomprehensible that a journalist makes his notes on a smartphone, and not with a fountain pen in an elegant notebook. And please note, it’s an article about a fountain pen store of all places. Although it can always get worse, sighs Akkerman: "Even the representative of Montblanc came here today take orders with a laptop instead of a fountain pen from his employer. '

Why the fountain pen grades to other writing instruments as a Michelin restaurant to McDonald's? "Look, you leave only ones and zeros behind with your smartphone," said Rutte. "But your handwriting and your fountain pen are extensions of yourself that you leave something behind what is really yours. Nowadays many people are congratulating each other with their birthday on Facebook, but isn’t that's just flat and impersonal compared with a nice handwritten card? "

The history of P. W. Akkerman goes back to 1910, when Pieter Willem Akkerman (1886-1955) in the Hague Passage began an business for letterheads, business cards, rubber stamps and enamel nameplates. In the late 1910’s the fountain pen was introduced in the window. In no time, the shop grew into a concept, partly due to Akkerman’s  fine sense of marketing. "Parents, your child has a good report card? Give them a nice gift. The most useful is a fountain pen, " was it called in advertisements.

Grandson Arthur Akkerman is now half a century in the store. The golden age was the sixties, seventies and eighties, when P.W. Akkerman had two cases, at number 13 and 15 in the Passage, with not only fountain pens also calendars and diaries. "A rows that were! Princess Juliana arrived two hours to figure out long calendars. While enjoying a cappuccino, chocolate and a cigarette. She bought twenty or thirty calendar, all Christmas gifts. It was unique, U-NIQUE! "

P. W. Akkerman doesn’t manufacture their own pens, but they do ink. The colors carry Hague Tinted names like 'Laan van Nieuw-Oost Indigo' en 'Rood Haags Pluche'. The fountain pen specialist has also launched a new line to the Dutch masters modeled ink, such as 'Rembrandt's Karmozijn', 'Israel's Kobaltblauw' en 'Scharlaken van Jan Steen'.

About the annual revenue  Akkerman and Rutte are not really forthcoming. " But still P.W. Akkerman doesn’t do too badly, Rutte assures. The fountain pen is for some a status symbol to distinguish them from ordinary ballpoint people, Rutte noted. "Some parents come here, amazed, inside with their son. "He insisted to look for a pen here," they say. I know teenagers on their fifteenth receive a fountain pen gift from their parents because mom and dad were writing with a fountain pen themselves. It’s a beautiful tradition, which they pass on to the next generation. "

"A fountain pen is much closer to you than any other writing instrument whatsoever," says Akkerman. "You must take care of it, filling, cleaning. Someone who has lost his fountain pen, comes franticly ill into the shop. Someone who has lost his ballpoint thinks bad luck, ballpoint gone, no big deal.

"(Writing with) a fountain pen is something you need to get used to you," said Rutte. "The tip  you write with, is slowly but surely being polished by the paper, which then molds precisely to your writing angle after a while and writes best (for you)." Therefore Akkerman will never lend his Montblanc to Rutte, nor will Akkerman ever make use fifty year old Sheaffer from Rutte. "If someone else puts your pen in a slightly different angle on the paper, it can ruin your pen," said Rutte. "So if the person is going to press harder, causing the nib to change it’s angle, the whole writing comfort breaks."

* Dutch Idiom Spaans Benauwd (Become Spanish breathless)
The idiom refers to a state of fear or anxiety. Associating this with Spain takes us back to the times when Spain was the oppressor, during and prior to the Eighty Years War. (source)

Hope you enjoyed reading the article and it has inspired you to pick up a fountain pen and write :)

Mailart Monday: May the force be with you

In the last week of 2016 the sad news hit of Carrie Fisher's passing. To many she was an icon as Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise. Today's MailART Monday is dedicated as a tribute to her.
May the force be with you Mail Art

Mail Art envelope "May the force be with you" made with stamps from Viva Las Vegastamps! Plate 1473 with artwork by Brian Kesinger. The base is a black envelope and I used colorbox cloud white stamping ink and white WOW embossing powder for the contrast. The starts are embossed with Stampedous Stardust embossing powder.

May the force be with you Mail Art

I colored the embossed image of "Saving the Galaxy with Otto" with Caran d'Ache Pablo coloring pencils. The colors can be blended together quite nicely and work well on dark paper. The contours are colored with a silver pencil to make the image stand out on the envelope more.

May the force be with you Mail Art

I also made this note card to accompany the envelope with the stamp "Darth Victoria".The image was stamped on tracing paper and colored with promarkers. I made the "galaxy" themed paper by spattering white and silver Liquitex INKS! over the card. The matted with white card stock then onto black again for the contrast. May the force be with you phrase stamp can definitely be used for cards to wish someone well or success. And to wish someone farewell also...

May the force be with you, dear Carrie 💖
